Although its implementation raises many questions and challenges, emotional well-being has gained prominence as an explicit objective of formal education. The school has gone from having an implicit role in the teaching of values to recognizing its responsibility in the integral development of students. However, there are still dilemmas related to the possible competition between academic performance and socioemotional development, as well as to the lack of specific teacher training.
The PSIKOR research group works on the promotion of emotional well-being through two approaches: basic research, seeking to clarify its impact on the psychosocial adjustment of students, including, along with aspects related to psychological health, others of an academic nature such as school involvement or performance itself; and, applied, transferring this knowledge to schools through training and intervention actions.
Currently, based on the research results obtained, it is collaborating with several schools in the Basque Autonomous Community to integrate emotional well-being in their educational projects through the revision and design of their Tutorial Action Plans. These plans specify the curricular contents of guidance and the criteria and procedures for its implementation at academic, professional and personal levels. PSIKOR works mainly at the latter level, which includes content related to emotional wellbeing and where the centers face greater difficulties given the limited training of teachers. The project aims to analyze their needs with respect to the objective of well-being and offer training and interventions adapted to these shortcomings.
